"Our Humble Beginnings..."
The church ministry actually began in the summer of 1987 in the home of Bishop Jerry Taylor. Initially, he conducted weekly prayer services on Monday night. Out of this grew the first Sunday morning service, which was held in his home on January 17, 1988. The congregation was composed of three families at that time: The Taylors, Brewers, and Kellys. The ministry did not yet have a name, but they persevered. One day in July 1988, Bishop Taylor was meditating, fasting, and praying to God when he was inspired to name the ministry "Holy City" as found in Revelations 21:2. The ministry had grown from three families to ten at this time. During worship service, people sat in the living room, dining room, stairwell, and any vacant spot. A building was certainly needed for this growing flock. He located a building in the immediate vicinity, and the church moved from his home to a store front location at 7610 Highway 70 in 1991.
We quickly outgrew the little storefront church and it was a known fact that if you were not on time, you would have to stand. By 1994 we knew that we needed to find another location. We looked at many buildings over the next several months.
On June 5, 1995, we became the proud owners of 3208 James Road. This edifice seated approximately 400 people, and had spacious parking, a playground, a house next door with garage and storage buildings, and it was situated on 3.7 acres of land. Since our original purchase, we have added additional parking, a new foyer, new men and women’s restrooms, classrooms, prayer room, offices, and a balcony. We have also constructed a ramp to make the front of the building wheelchair accessible. Bishop Taylor personally completed most of this work, and he was on site daily for the work done by other contractors. We strongly believe in tithes, offering, and building fund drives, and as a result, we were able to pay off the mortgage on this property on April 2, 1999.
In June of 2001, we embarked upon building a new 1,000 plus seating sanctuary. One glorious Sunday in August of 2002, the saints of Holy City marched into the beautiful blue and white edifice giving God praises for all He had done. God continually smiles upon us. From our very humble beginnings, we presently have in excess of 800 families in our ministry.
Upon completion of the most eloquent sanctuary, the glory of God continued to rest upon the ministry. On July 1, 2006, the leader, Bishop Taylor, led the people into a multi-purpose Family Life Center called "Vision for Life." Its purpose is to promote unity and the upbuilding of families.
The Family Life Center consist of gym, food pantry, concession, men & women clothes' closet, multi-purpose room, arcade room, learning lab, youth room, bowling alley, sewing room, men & women restrooms with showers, laundry room, exercise room, game room with pool and air hockey table as well as a walk track.
The vision of our leader continues. Our future plans include purchasing surrounding properties to create a sports-plex that will include baseball fields, softball fields, and a playground with equipment for children. This will all be enclosed by brick and wrought iron fencing. Just as there are 12 gates to the holy city we call Heaven, we will have 12 gates to our city, the Holy City Church of God in Christ. Three gates in the east, three gates in the west, three gates in the north, three gates in the south...(Revelation 21:12-13)
We are expecting great things from this ministry, and we know that the people will come when you are giving them hope for a better day. Sometimes they may only need a listening ear, but it is our desire to have room to accommodate any avenues necessary to reach souls.
“To God Be The Glory!”
